Zrodzony z intensywnej rywalizacji z BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz 190E był wynikiem współpracy ze słynną firmą inżynieryjną Cosworth. To właśnie Brytyjczycy wzięli standardowy, 8-zaworowy silnik o pojemności 2,3 litra i modernizując go, udoskonalili. Podwozie W201 zostało wzmocnione przez większe stabilizatory, twardsze tuleje, mechanizm różnicowy o ograniczonym poślizgu, szybciej reagujące amortyzatory i krótsze przełożenie układu kierowniczego. Getrag dostarczył pięciobiegową skrzynię w układzie dogleg, aby zapewnić szybki i łatwy wybór biegów. Dokumenty samochodu potwierdzają wyposażenie w podgrzewane fotele, czujnik temperatury zewnętrznej, elektrycznie sterowany szyberdach, tylne głośniki, poduszkę powietrzną i radio. Evo II posiada także dodatkową parę opcjonalnych spojlerów: stałe przednie skrzydło i tylny spojler montowany poniżej większego tylnego skrzydła. The W201 chassis was beefed up with larger anti-roll bars, harder bushings, limited-slip differential, quicker dampers, and a faster steering ratio. Getrag provided the five-speed dogleg gearbox to ensure fast and easy gear selection. Cosworth then took the standard 8-valve engine and fitted a light alloy cylinder head, dual-overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder. Continued development bumped engine displacement to liters in 1988. The initial “Evo” model overhauled the platform into a thoroughbred racer by installing a tuned version of the motor, larger brakes, and improved tires. Further enhancements included a wider front and rear track, stiffer adjustable suspension, and revised bodywork. For the Evolution II model, the engineers squeezed out an impressive 238 horsepower. Visually, the true highlight of the Evo II is the aero kit that features a towering rear spoiler, imposing fender flairs, and an even more aggressive front splitter. This Evo II offered here is the 106th of 502 built; it was delivered new to Mercedes-Benz Frankfurt in April 1990. Clad in the standard shade of Blauschwarz Metallic over Anthracite leather, this example’s build record indicates the fitment of heated seats, an external temperature sensor, power sunroof, rear speakers, airbag-equipped steering wheel, and a Mercedes radio. Acquired by the consignor in 2001 then showing 1,500 kilometers (~930 miles) and exported to Chile, this well-preserved Evo II presently shows under 27,500 kilometers (~17,100 miles) at time of cataloging. This particular example wears an additional pair of optional spoilers: a fixed front wing and rear decklid spoiler below the larger rear wing. This Evo II has been carefully preserved in climate-controlled storage and fastidiously maintained by authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers. The consignor states that car was taken for regular drives during their ownership to ensure proper mechanical function. This Evo II was professionally detailed and ceramic coated while within the consignor’s care, which was most recently provided in March 2020. With growing interest in historic motorsport has come renewed interest from collectors in the cars that were homologated in order to allow some of the greatest cars of all time to go racing in the first place. This Evolution II, now offered from twenty years of fastidious ownership by one owner, ranks among the most visually striking of all the homologation specials and warrants pride of place in any garage. In the late 1980s and early '90s, Germany's DTM touring-car racing series featured epic battles between the four-cylinder E30 BMW M3 and the four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 190E, and both were constantly escalating their entries' power and aerodynamics. This arms race culminated with the BMW M3 Sport Evo and this car, the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II. No, the Benz didn't automatically win the dogfight because its name was might be thinking, if there was an Evolution II, was there an Evolution I? Yes! What sets the 1990 Evo II apart from the first model offered one year prior, in 1989, is a wilder body kit and the inclusion of a previously optional AMG power pack for its 16-valve, engine. It represented the zenith of the 190E's factory performance potential—at least besides a six-cylinder AMG racing model—and just 502 were built in 1990 to satisfy DTM homologation rules. The Evo II's power-pack-equipped, Cosworth-tuned four-cylinder produced 232 horsepower (keep in mind, this was a naturally aspirated four in 1990!), and redline is marked on the tachometer at a stratospheric 7600 rpm. The Evo II engine featured a shorter stroke and larger bore than the Evo I's and formed the basis for the DTM cars' powerplants, which made up to 367 horsepower. Of note: This was the last DTM engine developed under the Benz banner; afterward, AMG handled the racing Evo II's ludicrous body kit is highly functional, and helped shove the 190E's drag figure down to an exceptionally low Cd while increasing downforce relative to the Evolution. Designed by a professor from the University of Stuttgart, the aero pack includes an adjustable rear wing and a rear window spoiler. All of this kit is amusingly juxtaposed by a Mercedes three-pointed star hood ornament poking up from the with previous hotted-up 190Es, the Evo II came with a hydraulic self-leveling rear suspension that, unlike many period Benzes with the feature, included a switch for selecting different heights. (Other Mercedes with the self-leveling suspension, or SLS, merely reacted to loads placed on the rear axle to combat rear-end sag via a simple valve.) This feature came in handy given how the Evo II sat even lower than its rarity, uncommon performance, and wild looks, you'd expect 190E Evolution IIs to be expensive. Guess what? You're right! A recent auction on Bring a Trailer saw serious bidding, with the car's final sale price reaching $199,000. As with all Evo IIs save for the final two built, that example is painted a sinister dark blue. And since it was located in the Netherlands and will, according to the top bidder, stay in the EU, the new owner avoids serious shipping charges on top of the final tally. Whomever picked up this 190E got a delightfully hard-core sports sedan from one of the most heated periods in the BMW-Mercedes racing rivalry. Happy 30th birthday, 190E Evo story was originally published on February 3, 2020 and has been updated. We’ve featured the 190E Evolution II a few times in the past couple months. Today we have another one that takes an already pretty bonkers car and turns the dial up a few more notches. This Evo II in California is another one of the 502 made that found it’s way stateside and of course, carries a mid-six figure price tag. But like I hinted at, this one has a few extras that turns the car into a pseudo DTM car for the streets. So let’s check this rare W201 with a little extra something FOR DETAILS: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II on eBayYear: 1990Model: 190E Evolution IIEngine: liter inline-4Transmission: 5-speed manualMileage: 3,021 miPrice: $289,000he motorsport rivalry between Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s culminated in to what we call a legend today, the 190E Evolution II or better known as the “Evo II.” In 1984, Mercedes introduced the 190E which was an innovative compact premium sport sedan for its time. The 190E dominated the segment it introduced for two years until BMW answered with the E30 3-series based M3 in 1986. In 1988, Mercedes upgraded the to but the increased performance was still not enough to challenge the BMW M3. In 1989, Mercedes introduced the “Evo I” with further refinement of the previous motor and chassis but still could not clinch the German Touring Car Masters (DTM).In 1990, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 190E Evolution II to incredible fan fare at the 1990 Geneva International Motor show. Building upon the “Evo I” from the previous year, the “Evo II” received drastic aerodynamics upgrades—widened fenders, aggressive side skirts, a large adjustable rear wing, and a rear window spoiler. The body kit was shaped by Dr. Richard Eppler of Stuttgart University, who was an expert in aerodynamics. Dr. Eppler wind tunnel tested his design and was able to increase downforce and lower the drag coefficient to heart of the car is the engine and it was developed in collaboration with Cosworth and AMG. The “Evo II” engine was based on an even shorter stroke unit of the previous “Evo I” engine and included the AMG PowerPack option. The PowerPack option came with hotter camshafts, a larger diameter throttle body, more aggressive ignition and fuel management as well as optimization of the intake and exhaust systems. Power output increased from 197 hp to 235 hp, the redline increased from 7,250 rpm to 7,700 rpm, and torque increased from 176 lb ft to 181 lb ft. The same full SLS suspension found in the “Evo I” that allowed the vehicle ride height to be adjusted from an interior switch was also fitted to the “Evo II.”Only 502 examples of the “Evo II” were produced for homologation in compliance with Group A racing in the DTM. 500 of these examples were painted exclusively in blue black metallic with the production number indicated on the shift knob. The remaining two factory cars, number 501 and 502, were painted astral silver. Experts says that all 500 examples were sold before its unveil at the Geneva Motor “Evo II” had its DTM racing debut on the North Loop of the Nürburgring in June 1990. After 6 years of being overshadowed by BMW, Audi, and Ford in DTM racing; Mercedes finally found success with the “Evo II” with driver Kurt Thiim winning third place in the 1990 DTM championship. In 1991, Mercedes continued their success with the “Evo II” by winning the manufacturer title. In 1992, Mercedes went on to sweep the manufacturer and drivers titles by winning a total of 16 races. Kalus Ludwig won the 1992 DTM Championship ahead of Kurt Thiim and Bernd Schneide—all three driving a 190 E Evolution “Evo II” really lives up to its namesake; starting with the evolving into the Evolution I and eventually evolving into the championship winning Evolution II. It was Mercedes’ desire to evolve that produced such an iconic and beautiful machine we now admire and love Japanese collector purchased this car back in the 90’s but felt he needed to continue the same spirit of evolution that Mercedes started. A regular “Evo II”s performance was not enough for this wealthy individual, and since money was not an issue he commissioned to build an “Evo II” DTM spec race car for the do not do this car justice as the attention to detail is meticulous when inspected in person. To increase the engine performance, he opted for upgrades like custom exhaust manifold, custom full exhaust, custom intake manifold, custom header tank, custom aluminum surge tank, individual throttle bodies, larger injectors, lightweight aluminum pulley, fuel cell system, and a Motec engine management system. The interior was transformed to a more race car appropriate setting with a roll cage, Recaro racing seats, kill switches, new gauges, and a quick release AMG steering suspension and brakes were also upgraded to increase handling performance. Brembo Monobloc 6 piston brakes are fitted in the front and 4 piston brakes and fitted in the rear for incredible stopping performance. The chassis is stiffened with an underbody brace in the front, driver side, and passenger side. Larger metal suspension links were added to the front and rear. The iconic OZ Racing wheels are authentic and come in a staggered setup of 18× in the front and 18×10 in the details of the car include a DTM style mono windshield wiper, deleted fuel door, deleted sunroof, battery relocated to the trunk, and HID headlights. The (very wealthy) owner who did these tweaks must of had a pretty strong passion to own a DTM car that you could run on the street. Nothing was left untouched on this car but at first glance you’d never really know it aside from the giant DTM inspired wheels. But once you really start poking around you see this car has a whole other level to it. I’m seriously impressed how well everything was modified and the level of detail that went into it. The only thing I don’t love is the full roll cage because that means any kind of driving over 10 mph will have you throwing a full helmet on so it kind of takes all the fun out of a street legal DTM car. Otherwise, the suspension, brakes, extensive engine modification, everything on this car is really well the price is $289,000. And this might sound nuts, but it’s a really good number seeing as what others are asking for these cars that don’t have a fraction of the money sunk into it. Unless the owner bought this car new, he’s probably taking a loss on it given the amount of parts and their cost. So if you are looking for a DTM play toy, this is probably your best option — if you can spend almost $300,000 without feeling it.– Andrew
